Bringing Stories to Life: A Conversation with Playwright Caroline Garry
What does it feel like to watch your own words come alive on stage? For playwright Caroline Garry, it's a mix of joy, surprise, and deep personal connection. Caroline, a young artist with a big imagination, recently shared her creative process, inspiration, and the emotional journey of writing her original play ā a whimsical, heartfelt story filled with scuba divers, sassy mermaids, and an unforgettable shark.
We sat down with Caroline, along with director Lizz Windnagel and Caroline's mom Kit Brady, to reflect on what it's been like to write and help direct her play from the ground up.
An Interview with Caroline Garry, playwright, director, and performer with DSAMn's Advanced Acting Troupe:
CG - Caroline Garry
LW - Lizz Windnagel
KB - Kit Brady (Carolineās mom)
LW: If you could describe your play in one word or a symbol or a color what would you choose?
CG: I think I like the color blue and in one word I might say the play is really amazing.
LW: I feel like youāve had a good balance as a playwright of having really strong ideas for what you want and then being open to what the actors are interested and thatās always a hard balance.
CG: Yeah it is. Sometimes I like listening to the actors. I like what they mention about what to put into the play.
LW: Were you surprised by any of the characters that emerged in the play or did you have an idea of all the characters when you started writing?
CG: I was definitely surprised mostly because I like how what Ann says about loneliness about what sheās working with and Iām glad I put that in so she can relate to it.
LW: Do you have a favorite part of the play so far?
CG: My favorite part is the shark part.
LW: This oneās kind of putting you on the spot. Do you have any ideas for future plays?
CG: I was thinking like maybe about how to live in an apartment.
